MAH: MOVING AROUND HEIDEGGER
"Meditate"
A Janeann Dill Film / with Hank Lazer

IS SCREENING IN ZERO FILM FESTIVAL

Saturday December 5th DOWNTOWN INDIE THEATER
10:20 PM Experimental Films Program

MAH: Moving Around Heidegger is an experimental film project and
ambitious multi-screen digital art installation and dome projection
by artist and filmmaker, Janeann Dill. The project manifests in
phases across the span of 2006-2011. "Meditate" is the early phase.
In collaboration with poet, Hank Lazer, the project reaches across the
disciplines of experimental animation, poetry, dance, film and computer
animation to focus on shared elements of thinking, timing, and gesture.
The outcome of the collaboration, Moving Around Heidegger, was to
generate critical questions inside a creative practice as an opening into
'what' 'it' would 'be' when collaboration is founded on the concept of
neither discipline illustrating the other. Thus the first year of this
collaborative relationship between Drs. Janeann Dill and Hank Lazer
was spent in discussion of Martin Heidegger's "What is Called Thinking?"
and "On Time and Being."

A film project that immerses the viewer in a world of time and
movement, an early stage of the larger project, MEDITATE,
is on tour through 2010 in a curated exhibition, "Globalscreen,"
in museums in Germany, Senegal, Greece, Sarajevo, Italy, South
Africa, and Malaysia. MAH: MEDITATE is a short black and white
two-minute film completed in 2008.

Principle cinematography was shot in the University of Alabama
television broadcast studio in the Center for Public Television
and in the Art Department's Woods Gallery. A sound track was
produced and composed by Janeann Dill of Hank Lazer reading
selected poems for the film. A series of Dill's monumental
charcoal drawings (8'x4') were mounted as the production set
in the gallery. Dr. Dill engaged one of her directed research
studies students, Courtney Marr, to design choreography to the
drawings and sound track. On behalf of Undergraduate Research
Funds, a selection of Dr. Dill's students from Seminar in
Creativity, Seminar in Contemporary Animation Studies,
Directed Research Studies, and Fine Arts Survey participated as
film crew, dancers, digital photography camera operators for
stop-motion capture, production assistants and crafts services.
This project involved approximately fifteen undergraduate students,
professional staff, and a former student-alumni presently
working for the Alabama Public Television as a cinematographer
and editor.

Partial funding awarded from University of Alabama's New College,
Creative Campus, and the College of Arts and Sciences'
Dean Robert Olin and Associate Dean Beverly Roskos-Ewoldsen
with in-kind contributions by the Schools of Music, Art Department,
Costume Department in Theater and Dance, the Center
for Public Television, and Alabama Public Television.

THE SECRET OF KELLS
Magic, fantasy and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Young Brendan lives in the Abbey of Kells, a remote medieval outpost under siege by raiding barbarians. One day a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands, carrying an ancient--but unfinished--book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the faerie Aisling, a mysterious young wolf/girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarian hordes closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against barbarians?
