New Workshop Aims to Reinvent the Industry of Animation through Collaboration CULVER CITY, CA. Mar. 30 Arconyx Animation Studios is proud to present Collabs, a firstofitskind animation workshop for recent graduates, junior animators, or superstar students. This summer, participants will band together both online and onsite at the Culver City studio to learn animation production, while simultaneously producing an original animated property destined for market to the industry. Thirtysix students of all levels will take part in the first and only educational production environment with the sole focus of creating original animated properties. Unique to this program, the ownership of said property will be shared among ALL of the artists in training. Once completed, Arconyx will attempt to secure distribution and/or sale of the collectivelycreated project, which is something no other training program is offering. Fifteen year industry veteran, Kenny Roy, helms Arconyx Animation Studios and has taught animation for eight years, both online and in person, at schools and conferences around the globe. “Everybody agrees that the last piece of the education puzzle is work experience,” says Roy. “In this eight week intensive course, students will be put literally to the test as they work with other aspiring storytellers to bring their own original IP to life, while receiving the production experience needed to get employment in the changing industry.” The course will include weekly special guests from positions high up in the Animation field. Already confirmed are Animation Director Joe Ksander, Animation Director Jenn Emberly, and renowned animation legend and awardwinning Director Michel Gagne. Aside from learning from weekly special guests, Onsite Collaborators will receive eight weeks of development and training in a real studio, 1 hour of lecture/instruction every day from Kenny, multiple dailies and critique sessions throughout the week, access to a library of hundreds of animation training videos on KennyRoy.com, a front row seat to the 1 of 2weekly guest webcast, and most revolutionary, a share in the developed intellectual property to be pitched to major studios. Online collaborators will receive access via webcam to every benefit onsite collaborators receive, including a share in the developed intellectual property to be pitched to major studios. How is this different from other courses available? Kenny Roy thinks Collabs solves two problems: “Schools have offered short format courses forever, but the amount of work you can do on your own, without studio support, is not enough to sell. And some studios are trying to take advantage of student labor, but they take these poor kids’ money and kick them out the door afterwards with no profitparticipation. We’re solving both problems: Create a group that is all working together on a single property that will be polished enough to sell, and invite all of the participants to be owners in the property itself, all within the context of a course with the intense training necessary to get a job in this field.” Why is this needed? “The industry is going through major shifts”, says Roy. “Animation studios are feeling the pinch and the studios are trying to keep everything as business as usual. NOW is the time to try to do something different. I’ve already been able to enlist two schools in Europe and New Zealand to be satellites for Collabs 2014. As the project and participation grows and grows, our content will grow with it. The goal in a few years is to have a fully distributed and networked animation studio operating from all corners of the globe, producing feature animations and video games that we ALL own.” Please visit collabs.arconyx.com to apply and to read more about this brand new program.
